The RACC Catalunya Rally 2014 is celebrating its birthday
The 50th edition of the Rally Catalunya will be held for the tenth consecutive year on the Costa Daurada from 23 - 26 October. As is now customary, the rally routes will take the competitors over the roads of the inland counties of Tarragona province. Its headquarters will be in the resort of Salou and the service park in PortAventura. Organised by the RACC (Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia), with the support of PortAventura, Barcelona City Council, the Catalan Regional Government Tourism Department and the Salou and Costa Daurada Tourism Boards, it has become an essential date on the World Rally Championship calendar.
In 1954 it was decided to reinstate the “Volta a Catalunya” rally that had been held between 1916 and 1920. From 1957 it was known as the Rally Cataluña. It has been part of the European Rally Championship since 1975 and has counted towards the World Rally Championship since 1991. In 2010 it also became part of the Super 2000 Championship. The Rally España-Cataluña continued as a rally over asphalt until 2010. Since then it has been the only mixed surface rally of the whole season, combining dirt road and asphalt sections. The Rally Catalunya was held for the first time in Salou in 2005. The previous editions had been based in Lloret de Mar until, for reasons of safety and infrastructure, it was moved to the Costa Daurada.
On the occasion of its anniversary, the Rally RACC Costa Daurada organisers have commissioned a commemorative plaque with a gold background and the number 50 highlighted on one side. It has been specially designed as a collector’s item.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, new sections have been added to the 2014 itineraries. The timed stage on Saturday 25 October will have different sections, including the “Scala Dei”, which will probably be the star stage of this year’s Rally Catalunya. Based on the “El Priorat” stage of previous years, but with major differences in its route, it will be exactly 50 km long to commemorate the 50th anniversary and will be the longest in the history of the Rally Catalunya. This stage will also have another two stretches, those of “Colldejou” and “Tivissa”, which will include zones that have not been used in the competition since 2002.
Moreover, after a gap during the last two years, there will be a circuit of historical vehicles that were the protagonists of previous World Championship Rallies. They will be on show to the public next to the podium on Friday 24 October and will be driven over part of the rally route on Saturday and Sunday (25 and 26 October respectively).
Salou has been the nucleus of the RACC Costa Daurada Rally for the past 10 years, with PortAventura providing the rally service park, office and press room.
In addition to the innovations mentioned above, to celebrate the 50th edition, various activities for fans of all ages have been organised in Salou throughout the weekend. Once again this year the RACC Costa Daurada Rally 2014 will be an essential date on the WRC calendar. An intense, excitement-filled weekend linked to the world of the motor you won’t want to miss.
